About CALU

CALU Issue Groups

The CALU Issue Groups provide direct access by CALU members to the policy-development and issues identification process of CALU. The Issue Groups operate under the guidance of steering committees - groups of CALU Active and Associate Members who have expressed an interest and expertise in a particular area of advanced life underwriting and who have volunteered to serve as representatives of their peers.

Through this process, issues are identified for more detailed consideration and research by CALU volunteers, staff and consultants. Position papers are then created which state the issue and the objective of any issues management process specific to the accomplishment of the desired objective.

For example, an issue group may state its interest in the amendment of certain legislation which restricts or precludes the application of a particular product or service from meeting the needs of clients in advanced life underwriting situations. The issue group would then undertake to create a position paper which provides background information, identifies the desired solution, and recommends an appropriate course of action. This paper and its recommendations are then presented to the CALU Board of Directors through the Chair of the Issue Group, who also serves as a member of the Board.

Issue Groups are also expected to provide articles on issues and developments of interest to advanced life underwriting for publication in the CALU newsletters INFOexchange (a vehicle created specifically to encourage the exchange of information and ideas by CALU members) and the CALU Report. Each Issue Group is also responsible for the creation and presentation of workshops as part of the CALU Annual Meeting.

Issue Groups have the following objectives:

  • Identify areas of interest and concern to CALU members and utilize input and expertise of CALU members in the activities and initiatives of the Issue Group,
  • monitor marketing and legislative developments with regard to identified issues,
  • develop draft policy positions and recommendations for consideration by CALU Board of Directors,
  • inform members of status of issues and share information regarding advanced marketing applications through articles in INFOexchange and CALU Report, and
  • create, develop and present workshops as part of CALU Annual Meeting program.
